After a 2009 outbreak of Leaf Rust decimated much of Colombia's coffee production, the country was forced to re-energize its coffee industry. There has been a significant increase in the number of disease-resistant coffee trees planted in government-run research stations over the past five years, with the number of bags planted increasing from 7.5 million to over 12 million. In recent years, regional coffees have become increasingly popular and demonstrate the variety of flavour profiles available across the country. It is typical for Colombian coffee to have a mild body, a crisp acidity, and a sweet citric flavour. Many cooperatives and single estates experiment with new varieties and processing methods to create truly exceptional coffees - many of which win competitions.
